The number of UNIX workstations grew very fast in the early nineties:

At the same time, the number of PC's doubled in two years. Early 1993, we did a simple calculation. The number of keyboards (PCs, workstations, servers, terminals and so on) divided byy the number of people working at the Laboratory showed that we had over 2.5 keyboards per person. Partly, this was caused by old equipment staying around.
